Building Strong, Godly Homes, One Story at a Time

Welcome to my new blog! I know it’s been a while since I last posted, but I’ve been busily putting together a new website that incorporates my architectural business with my ministry. I hope you’ll take a look around and let me know what you think.

Building strong homes, one story at a time…

Home. For most people the word conjures up feelings of comfort, familiarity and love; a place we can go to get away from the worries of life and find rest. Walking through the door brings a deep sigh of relief.

Is that how it is for you? Or, do you walk in and immediately start sizing up the condition of your home when you enter; mentally taking notes of everything that needs to be done. Why can’t anybody other than ME do something around here, you say under your breath secretly hoping someone will hear you, take pity and start pitching in. As if! you think to yourself. You hurriedly start tidying up, putting in a load of wash while trying to decide what to feed you starving family for dinner. You just want to sit down a few minutes, for heaven’s sake!

If we’re brutally honest, most of us would probably say the last scenario has happened more times than we’d like to admit. We want our homes to be havens, but they feel more like the Family Circus cartoon. Our society pushes perfection at every turn; beautiful homes and  flawless women fill the covers of magazines in the check-out line at the grocery store, telling us we’ll never measure up to their standards. We sit down to watch a movie with our husband and the commercials shout that we need this and such to make us happy. And they make us wonder, is it true?

Our society presents worldly solutions and we take the bait, pulling at it until our homes start unraveling at the seams. This scenario plays out every day in our minds and is one reason I believe the home isn’t always the respite we desire. We believe the lies and become frustrated wives and mothers.front porch

As I was narrowing my focus toward the goal of my blog, I realized we need to be intentional about building strong and godly homes. It doesn’t just happen, we must work at it. As we struggle, juggle and feel guilty the entire time we’re trying to do it all, we must stop to understand that we have the primary responsibility for nurturing the home. And the only possible way to be successful in creating that space is to give it to God daily. Every. Single. Day.  Otherwise, we’ll drift into whatever current happens to flow by and wonder why our families are falling apart.

There are two verses that stand out to me as I think about our role as women in the home. They’re both from Proverbs, also known as the book of wisdom.

   The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.

~ Proverbs 14:1

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established;

through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.

~ Proverbs 24:3-4

I’d love to have you join me as I share my stories of real life in a real home as I strive to glorify God in the midst of it all. Let’s journey together as we learn how to apply these verses to our everyday lives and build strong homes for our families. They’re counting on us.
